This chart shows the total debt consumers have incurred, other than housing debt. It measures credit card debt, installment credit, hire purchase, personal loans, car loans, and store credit.
However, it does not account for loans people take out with many small finance companies, payday loans, or loans made by community 'loan sharks'.
It only counts debt recorded by the institutions who submit returns to the RBNZ. (Also, at this time, we are unsure how comprehensive the coverage is of this RBNZ series for credit union lending.)
