Occupancy rates for New Zealand's accommodation industry are the key marker for our tourism industry. This chart tracks data released monthly by Statistics NZ, and is updated about six weeks after the end of each month.
Guest-night data is collected in great detail by Statistics NZ, but only the national data is presented here.
Regional and other data is available directly from www.statistics.govt.nz
Data is highly seasonal, and is made up of four core components:
1. Hotels and resorts
2. Motels, motor inns, and apartments
3. Backpackers
4. Holiday parks

I own and operate a Motel and a Backpacker. The statement "Guest-night data is collected in great detail by Statistics NZ"is quite incorrect. At the end of each month, we forward to Statistics NZ, a pre-populated form with all details regarding guest details diretly from our PMS. Unfortunately, all direct online bookings (such as Booking.com, Expedia etc...) are marked as "NZ guests" irrespective of their origin. With online bookings representing about 30-35% of all bookings, this heavily skews the true outcome. I have been mentioning this to Statistics NZ several times over the last 2 years, nothing has changed.
