The Opening Bell: Where currencies start for Friday, April 26, 2013

By Dan Bell

The NZD/USD opens around 0.8490 this morning after spiking to a high of 0.8562 overnight.

The NZD was one of the strongest currencies again overnight - NZD/AUD traded to a 3.5 year high around 0.8280 at one stage.

The NZD opens at current indicative mid rates:  0.8249 AUD, 0.6532 EUR, 0.5502 GBP, 84.39 JPY, and 0.8670 CAD.

Global risk sentiment has been more upbeat over the last few days, underpinning the rally in the NZD. US stocks have had another positive night with the S&P 500 up 0.4%.

Commodities have also strengthened with Copper and Gold both up 2.8%.

The EUR has struggled to find momentum over the last few days as the market prices in a greater chance of a rate cut from the ECB next week.

On the domestic front we get NZ Trade Balance numbers at 10:45am. Offshore the focus will be on the Bank of Japan monetary policy announcement this afternoon and tonight we get US GDP data.
