Sir Edmund Hilary's grin on the side of the Reserve Bank could barely be seen while staff came and stood outside the front entrance to watch snow fall heavily in Wellington's central business district as an icy blast hit the capital city.
What's it like where you are?
Here's another shot out of my press gallery window:

Mate I know it's a slightly unusual to get a few flecks of snow in Wellington, but don't you think all this weather hype and hysteria is a bit much?!
" The Big Chill "? " The Big Freeze "? Crikey dick, there's barely an inch of snow in most of it. My brother lives in the High Country between Lake Tekapo and Twizel, and he's laughing his wooly socks off at the people going bloody mental about this so called " polar blast "! His family sometimes get more than this lot on Christmas Day. Winter has been pathetic this year for snow in the places that usually get a lot of it.
But the townies see a few flakes of the white stuff blowing about in a stiff breeze and they act as if it's a new Ice Age.
The big problem are these bogus " weather " web sites set up by the media companies. The spokespeople for them ( not one of them a real meteorologist! ) whip the suckers into a frenzy about " Snow in Auckland soon!!! " because they know it will get the suckers flooding to their web sites and making lots of money for the media owners.
Still I suppose it's nice that children in places who never see any snow may get to touch some.
Some good pictures here of the Hawkes Bay - http://www.hawkesbaytoday.co.nz/local/gallery/polar-blast-in-hawkes-bay…
Was disappointed this morning as we barely had a fine dusting when I woke up here in Oxford (Nth Cant) and closing the school and preschool seemed a bit over the top but it soon started falling quite heavily. The snow was coming almost horizontally with the southerly wind.
Note to self: do not go into labour during the night. It is not a good time to drive an hour to the hospital and having a baby on the roadside today is definitely not an option.
Is there not a night-nurse at the Oxford Hospital , should you need assistence ?
The Rangiora Hospital is 30 minutes drive in good conditions , more so in inclement .
....... and just think of this , the Rangiora Hospital produces knarly little nurks such as GBH ! You really don't wanna go there ....
GBH, yes but after having the last 2 without pain relief (one of them an unplanned home water birth and we were actually still living in Chch 10mn from the hospital!), I have every intention of having this one under general anesthetic :) Just kidding...although the idea does have some appeal.
Anyway, still in one piece this morning and we've got heaps of snow here. The sledge is out and we're all ready to go out and play in the snow!
