On March 9, 2025 we published a story quoting Copyright Licensing’s Sam Irvine on what needs to change to make copyright enforcement feasible. The story, written by Juha Saarinen, referred to my request to Centrist’s Tameem Barakat to take down interest.co.nz content referred or linked to on its platform.
The story incorrectly implied that Centrist’s conduct was illegal. In fact, the Copyright Act 1994 permits fair dealing with original content for the purpose of reporting current events. Such fair dealing does not infringe copyright in that original work if accompanied by a sufficient acknowledgment. Further, in my exchange with Mr Barakat I had expressly acknowledged Centrist was within its rights to rely on fair dealing if it fairly summarised our stories and acknowledged interest.co.nz as the source.
I apologise to Mr Barakat and Centrist for any erroneous impression our story may have created.
