International dairy prices

May 2010

Butter markets are described as firm with demand along projected levels. Prices for anhydrous milk fat have risen in auction to US$5020/tonne. Most production is committed at this stage. NZ price fallen with currency to $5214/tonne.

Skim milk powder markets are mostly committed but pricing is higher with supply issues world wide. Prices eased in latest auction price to $US3612/t. NZ price $4872/tonne

Whole milk powder prices are higher with supplies close to balance. Latest auction price eased at US$3932/tonne. Production trends are described as easing. NZ price $5215/tonne

Cheddar The cheese prices have steadied/higher. Production is steady with limited supplies avaliable to meet extra needs. NZ price $5456/tonne.

The next dairytrade auction produced an easing with the weighted index of commoditys falling by 0.8%. It has quickly become a barometer for prices of the commodities offered, and a monthly watch by most in the industry. NZ’s yearly production figures are expected to be similar to last year and now most farmers are focusing on preparing for next years production. The US dairy industry is responding quickly to the upturn in prices, and with cheap feed available, have increased production significantly, into a market desperately looking for extra product.

It is reported that there has been strong overseas interest for the Crafar groups farms, and the firm commodity prices and world supply issues are helping create demand. Some early signs are being seen with dairy farm sales, that the credit constraints are easing, although pleasingly, little increase has been seen on farm costs. Winter cow grazing is a major cost and dry conditions could limit availability and push up rates, although early predictions suggest, only slightly above last year.
