Meat workers jobs come to a sudden end at Wairoa

Up to 200 meatworkers at Wairoa's Affco plant face up to five months out of work after the season came to an abrupt end.

The layoff of 130 remaining sheep workers yesterday saw the company follow through on a threat last week to lay off more than 200 sheep workers unless they worked faster and agreed not to be paid overtime.

After discussions with staff, the company decided to lay off about 70 workers last week but retain about 130 reports Business Day. However, those that were kept on were told yesterday it was the season's last day.Usually the plant closes in August-September for four to six weeks.

Slaughterman Steve Brady, who has worked at the plant for 29 years, said an ultimatum had been put to workers individually telling them they could stay on if they agreed to work faster and without overtime pay.

Mr Brady, 49, said workers had been told they could be out of work for up to five months if they did not agree to the ultimatum. It was unclear how many had agreed, but many had refused and were now looking at signing on for a benefit.

"It's a pay packet not coming into the household. It will have a big effect."

Affco general manager Rowan Ogg is refusing to discuss the matter, saying it was between management and staff.About 100 workers employed on the plant's beef chain will remain in work.
