In the week ahead, economists expect figures showing New Zealand's unemployment rate rose to 4.7% in the December quarter and is headed over 6%, which is why the Reserve Bank is expected to cut the OCR to 2% or lower. The Reserve Bank of Australia is expected to slash its OCR by 100 bps to 3.25% on Tuesday, while debate is growing over credit card interest rates here not falling in line with the OCR. Japanese and Korean output fell sharply in December and John Key's cabinet is expected to increase the minimum wage later today, Bernard Hickey reports in today's 90 at 9 with ASB.
