Bernard Hickey delivers an economic weather report in association with BNZ, including a look at an early indicator of activity in the employment market. For years it's been very difficult to measure job ads because of the shift in ads from newspapers to online. Now the Department of Labour has come up with a measure of online job ads from TradeMe, Seek and NZHeraldJobs. It shows the number of skilled jobs offered online rose 5% between September and December of last year. It's still 23% down from the same period as last year, but it has clearly bottomed out. Growth was strongest in Wellington, where skilled vacancies rose 7% for the quarter. Growth was reasonably evenly spread around NZ, however growth in Christchurch was slightly better than in Auckland.
