WHAT THE NZX50 INDEX IS DOING
The NZX50 is off just -0.2% in trade today, holding onto a +9% gain over the past six months and a +10% increase year-on-year.
THE MAIN GAINERS
The NZX has only 27 gainers to start the week. Kathmandu Brands (KMD, #50) leads with a +3% gain, softening its monthly decline to -4%. Year-on-year, however, Kathmandu's share price remains down -49%. Mercury Energy (MCY, #5) and Property for Industry (PFI, #26) follow, both up +2%. Mercury faces a steep -14% decline for the month and is down -11% year-on-year. Property for Industry gains +1% over the last month but is down -3% for the year. Vital Healthcare Property (VHP, #25) also posted a +1% gain but remains down -17% year-on-year.

THE MAIN DECLINERS
On the decliners’ side, 61 companies fall today, with Oceania Healthcare (OCA, #39) leading the losses, down -4% for the day and -6% for the month. Despite recent declines, Oceania has surged +33% over the last six months and is now down just -3% year-on-year. Summerset Holdings (SUM, #16) drops -3%, marking a -1% monthly decline but a strong +36% gain over six months and +25% year-on-year. Contact Energy (CEN, #8) and Fletcher Building (FBU, #15) both fell -2%. Contact Energy is up +4% for the month and +12% year-on-year, while Fletcher Building continues to struggle, down -10% for the month and -40% year-on-year.

KEY ANNOUNCEMENTS
Auckland International Airport (AIA, #3) recorded 862,000 international passenger movements in November 2024, up +3% year-on-year. While international seat capacity declined by -1%, flight load factors improved by 3.8 percentage points to 82.7%. Notably, East and South-East Asian routes saw a 21% rise in passengers, with China routes performing strongly, reporting a +17% passenger increase on similar capacity levels. New Zealand passport holders accounted for 43% of all international movements, with volumes rising +3%, while Australian passport holders saw a +10% increase, boosted by events in Auckland. Domestic passenger movements rose +3% compared to November 2023, driven by events in Auckland, including concerts that increased weekly passenger numbers by 10%. Routes to Wellington and Christchurch saw the largest growth, with an additional 25,000 passenger movements (+7%). Total passenger movements for November 2024 reached 1.63 million, representing 90% of pre-COVID levels, with domestic traffic at 92% and international at 89%. For the 12 months ending November 2024, total passenger movements stood at 18.7 million, also 90% of pre-COVID levels.
Contact Energy's (CEN, #8) Customer business reported mass market electricity and gas sales of 290GWh, slightly down from 298GWh in November 2023, with a netback of $134.39/MWh (-3%). The Wholesale business saw contracted electricity sales rise to 733GWh (+17%) and generated or acquired 741GWh (+5%). Generation costs decreased to $34.43/MWh (-20%), with own generation costs at $27.9/MWh (-16%). Key project progress included Te Huka 3 at 98% and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at 33% completion, both slightly behind targets. South Island controlled storage was at 141% of mean, and North Island storage at 119%. Clutha scheme storage stood at 118%, with inflows at 143% of mean.
Meridian Energy (MEL, #2) reported a decrease in national hydro storage to 134% of the historical average as of 10 December, with South Island storage at 137% and North Island at 120%. November inflows were 119% of the historical average, with Waitaki catchment storage ending the month at 151%, while Waiau catchment storage stood at 88%. Snow storage in the Waitaki catchment was 91% of average. November was generally warm and dry across New Zealand, with below-normal rainfall in most regions except the South Island's West Coast. National electricity demand fell -2.2% year-on-year, while Meridian’s retail sales volumes rose +1.8%. Residential sales grew +0.6%, agricultural +11.4%, and large business +7.8%, though small-medium business and corporate segments saw declines of -1.1% and -1.8%, respectively. The New Zealand Aluminium Smelter maintained an average load of 451MW.
