BNZ says users of its mobile banking application can now instantly add credit to 2degrees and Vodafone prepay mobile phones by entering the number of the phone they want to top up.
The bank maintains this is a New Zealand first, following on from it being the first bank to allow Trade Me payments via a mobile banking app, and enabling small businesses to accept payments via mobile phones through PayClip.
"With smartphones now central to people’s lives, this app update provides our customers with a convenient and simple way to top up their phone and stay connected,” Stephen Bowe, BNZ head of digital, said.
“In the last financial year we saw mobile phones overtake internet banking as the most popular digital channel used by our customers when managing their money," Bowe added.
BNZ says mobile usage now comprises 60% of its personal online banking, just over four years after the bank launched mobile banking.
In July last year ASB said more than half its customers who bank electronically now did so via mobile devises such as smartphones and tablets.
