Readers who are interested in following the price of gold will now find we have expanded our coverage of precious metals.
We now have daily data for the price of a range of gold products, sourced from a variety of markets.
This daily data is in both the currency of the market and in New Zealand dollars. This makes it very easy to track value changes and assess local offer prices.
We are now tracking the price of a range of gold coins, gold bars, and scrap gold, in addition to tracking international market prices of silver and platinum. You can find this new content in our Personal Finance section.
The coverage of gold coin prices is extensive. It covers eight types of gold coins that you can currently buy, from sizes 1/10th of an ounce, ¼ ounce, ½ ounce, and one ounce. The products we monitor include the Gold Kiwi, Gold Pacific Sovereign, Australian Kangaroo, Canadian Maple, the South African Krugerrand, the American Buffalo, the US Gold Eagle, and the Austrian Philharmonic.
Trading in these precious metal products requires you to know about how the professionals define the specifications for these products, and we have set these out in an easy-to-understand summary.
Our coverage of gold bars and gold minted bars (of 999.9 purity) follows sizes from the tiny one gram, up to the NZ$60,000 plus one kilo bar. Both BUY and SELL prices are tracked, and the level of spread is in itself very interesting.
We also track the international price of gold, silver, and platinum scrap which will be a very useful reference point for readers who may be considering selling used jewellery and other precious metal objects in New Zealand. While we don't have local scrap prices available, knowing what international professional players are willing to pay over a wide range of grades (carats) can help you make sure you get a fair value when you sell locally.
