A quick note to our regular readers with a geeky bent. We do this because we're a bit geeky ourselves and know details like this are important to high volume readers and advertisers, particularly those with slower internet connections.
We are rolling out a number of code optimizations on our pages in conjunction with migrating our ad spot serving to Trademe. Along the way we have been running the Yahoo YSlow page performance plugin for Firefox 3.
Before we applied our page optimisations a week or so ago we were getting an F from YSlow.
The initial page optimizations improved this to a C or D depending on how many APN adverts were running.
Now that we have applied further optimizations and removed redundant code as part of the migration to Trademe adserving our page loading performance ranking has increased to a B.
This is actually faster than most of the bigger news sites in New Zealand, including NZHerald (D) and Stuff (D).
We're trying all the time to make our site easier and faster to use, as well as more useful. We'd love any suggestions you have for further improvements.
