Investment Savings and Insurance Association appoints former sustainable business champion Peter Neilson to new CEO

Former business sustainability boss Peter Neilson has been named new chief executive officer of the Investment Savings and Insurance Association.

Neilson's appointment fills the gap left by ex-CEO Vance Arkinstall, who stepped down last year amid criminal charges against two failed finance companies with which he was involved.

Neilson comes from the New Zealand Business Council for Sustainable Development where he was chief executive since 2004. During his time at the council, Neilson championed carbon pricing, levies on solid waste and the popularisation of sustainable business practices.

ISI chairman Sean Carroll said Neilson's appointment will see the ISI increase its focus on retirement income and savings and under-insurance in New Zealand.

An economist by training, Neilson has worked as an international consultant with both Ernest and Young, the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research and as a merchant banker. He also has a parliamentary background and held (under the Lange Labour government) cabinet positions with the Ministry of Revenue, Finance and State-Owned Enterprises.

Neilson joins the ISI on May 1.

The ISI is the industry body representing superannuation, KiwiSaver and the life insurance sector.
