WHAT THE NZX 50 INDEX IS DOING
The NZX50 tumbled -3.0% today, driven by market uncertainty following last week’s tariff announcement from the White House. The index is now down -5.9% over the last six months and down -1.0% year-on-year.
THE MAIN GAINERS
Only 11 companies posted gains, with Manawa Energy (MNW) the sole NZX50 constituent in the green. It rose +1% today, though it’s down -4% over the past month. Year-on-year, Manawa is up +1%.

THE MAIN DECLINERS
The 73 decliners dominated the session. Vulcan Steel (VSL) led the losses, plunging -10%. It’s now down -12% in the last month and -17% year-on-year. Vista Group (VGL) fell -6%, bringing its monthly loss to -10%, though it remains up +68% year-on-year. Gentrack (GTK) also dropped -6%, down -11% over the past six months, but still up +18% from a year ago. Mainfreight (MFT) shed -6% as well, extending its monthly loss to -13% and down -12% year-on-year.

KEY ANNOUNCEMENTS
Contact reported (CEN) 282GWh of mass market sales, down from 297GWh a year ago, while netback rose to $182.13/MWh (from $142.10). Wholesale electricity sales were 701GWh (March 2024: 740GWh), with net revenue of $135.72/MWh. Generation rose to 767GWh, with unit costs at $70.12/MWh and own generation cost at $57.0/MWh. Te Huka 3 is 99.6% complete; BESS progress is at 60% vs a 67% target. Otahuhu Q3 2025 futures rose to $330/MWh. Clutha catchment inflows were 75% of mean, and gas contracts for the next 12 months total 3.8PJ.
