WHAT THE NZX50 IS DOING
The NZX50 is essentially unchanged today. Over the month the index up up +2.8% and compared to this time last year the NZX50 is up +11.7%.
THE MAIN GAINERS
As expected with the energy producer's big announcement Manawa Energy (MNW, #24) leads the pack of 32 gainers, up a huge +32.5% since yesterday. MNW is now up +21.1% year-on-year. (It's a transaction that has helped power Infratil (IFT, #4) up +20% in 2024.) Freightways Group (FRW, #21) has the second biggest gain up +2.9%. FRW has gained +14.4% year-on-year. Third on the board is Kiwi Property Group (KPG, #22) as they look to level yesterdays decline. KPG is up 1.6% from yesterday, putting the group up +5% for the month.

THE MAIN DECLINERS
There are a total of 43 decliners today, led by Kathmandu Brands (KMD, #46) down -5.8%. KMD now -36.4% year-on-year. Two energy companies have the next biggest declines with Mercury Energy (MCY, #5) down -4.4% and Contact Energy (CEN, #8) down 3.6%. Both companies are at small declines for the month and year. Vital Healthcare (VHP, #23) is also down, declining -2.3% since yesterday, down -6.3% from this time last year.

THE KEY ANNOUNCEMENTS
The biggest announcement of the day is Contact Energy (CEN, #8) set to takeover other power generator Manawa Energy (MNW, #24). For more detail on the announcement, see this:

Briscoe Group (BGP) has announced its half-year results today achieving record results. BGP posted a record $372.08 million in sales for the half-year ending on the 28th of July. This is an increase of +0.77% from this period last year. BGP Group Chair Dame Rosanne Meo said “This half-year result represents, again, an outstanding performance in a market which continues to be very challenging. To post record sales for the half and an underlying trading profit(1) close to last year is very impressive.” The Directors of the company are set on paying an interim dividend of 12.50 cents per share which is unchanged from last year's interim dividend.
