ASB has named Simon Tong as its executive general manager for technology, innovation and payments. Tong succeeds Russell Jones who recently changed roles, becoming ASB's executive general manager of retail banking.
Tong starts at ASB on March 27, shifting from Fairfax Media New Zealand where he's the managing director. Between 2006 and 2013 Tong was CEO of payments business Paymark.
ASB says its technology, innovation and payments division is responsible for technology performance, payments and the development of innovative products and services, plus transformational projects.
“As a technologist with a career including more than 18 years of senior management roles in complex, technology-focused organisations, Simon brings a unique combination of skills, industry experience and knowledge to the role. He is a strong people-leader with a proven track record of managing large and dynamic organisations and I know he will be a very good fit with the ASB culture," ASB CEO Barbara Chapman says.
For his part Tong says he's "thrilled" to be joining ASB.
In a preliminary ruling last November, the Commerce Commission declined a merger application from Fairfax and NZ Herald publisher NZME. The regulator's final decision is due by March 15.
