The Reserve Bank says John McDermott, Acting Assistant Governor/General Manager of Business Operations since April, has been appointed as the Assistant Governor/General Manager for Digital Solutions and Security.
McDermott (pictured) joined the Reserve Bank in 2019 and is not to be confused with the former Reserve Bank Assistant Governor and Chief Economist of the same name who is now executive director of public policy and economic research firm Motu.
McDermott takes up a new role in the central bank and prudential regulator's leadership team. He's responsible for developing and overseeing the effective delivery of the Reserve Bank’s digital and security functions. The Reserve Bank says he brings "extensive public and private sector experience" in digital and cyber security strategy, capability uplift and operational leadership.
The appointment was made following an external recruitment process, the Reserve Bank says, with McDermott staring in his new role effective Tuesday.
Before joining the Reserve Bank, McDermott worked in strategic advisory roles at the New Zealand Transport Agency, the New Zealand Fire Service, and Kiwibank. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Physics and Mathematics from Victoria University.
