BusinessDesk: NZ exodus to Australia continues in January, marked by departing Cantabrians

By Paul McBeth

New Zealand recorded its biggest loss of migrants in a 12-month period since August 2001, as Kiwis continued to jump the ditch seeking a better standard of life and higher-paying jobs in Australia.

Some 4,700 more New Zealanders left for Australia than arrived in January, taking the annual loss to a record 38,100 in the 12 month-period, according to Statistics New Zealand. That drove a monthly net outflow of migrants to 500, and pushed the net outflow of migrants to 3,134 in the year ended Jan. 31, the highest net loss since August 2001.

“Net losses have been recorded in 10 of the 11 months since the February 2011 earthquake in Christchurch,” Statistics NZ said in a statement.

The biggest loss of migrants was in Canterbury with an annual outflow of 3,700, while Auckland was the only region to attract a net inflow of people at 5,600 in the 12 months ended Jan. 31.

Short-term visitors rose 0.5 percent to 266,800 people in January from the same months a year earlier, led by a 61 percent surge in Chinese tourists. On an annual basis, short-term visitor numbers rose 2.7 percent to 2.6 million, led by more Chinese, Australian and French visitors.

Are we being told the whole story?  What is the accounting for -

1 People on work visa being given residency?

2 People on student visas being given residency?

3 Familly reunification immigrants?

4 Overstayers and other generally illegal immigrants

The general impression that I have is that a lot more people are flooding into NZ.  (faces on street, traffic on roads, shortage of housing, unemployment)

A lot of Kiwis may be leaving for Australia but they are being replaced by an understated flood of immigrants. - A sort of ethnic and social cleansing by stealth.

Why are they coming to Australia, to the highest house prices and riskiest economy in the world? Crazy! If they're looking for jobs in Oz maybe they should read this first...

Roy Morgan Poll: Australian unemployment rate at a ten year high of 10.3%. Employment Rout: Official figures masking massive job woes.

They'll be stuck renting or buying overpriced hovels while the Australian economy collapses under the strain of this housing ponzi sheme.

Jay Goods.

You should see what the future holds for them here...  EXTREMELY Over priced $hitboxes, low wages - if you can get a job of course, a government intent on selling everything "NZ" to any foreign bidder... got to love that JonKey... so nice when he smiles and waves...

Hmmm, just thinking about it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy... forget what I wrote before, ..."everything is going to be all right...." smile and wave for me John "...everything is going to be all right..." smile and wave...

and then with head swaying to that most awesome of waves and that most calming of smiles... "everything is going to be all right, rockabye..."

Mandalay, as much as I like Adelaide I do miss nz. I feel both sadness and anger that I have found it necessary to move to aus to get ahead. I corresponded with key in 2007 before he became pm. He spoke strongly to me about closing the gap with aus, and addressing housing. In practice he has done very little, arguably nz has gone backwards in both areas since he has been pm. Smile and wave.

and there you have it.... being PM wasn't about doing the best for NZ, it was about his bucket list... Well he can tick it off and move on now, it's done... and the damage too! But smile and wave , smile and wave!

Well if it's "really" 10% in aus its probably "really"12% plus in nz. And what happens to nz if aus collapses??? Surprise surprise nz tanks too

Unfortunately things are worse in NZ than Australia.  Houses are quite simply even less affordable in NZ than in Australia - ridiculous when you see how much land is just sitting empty here.

Anything bad about the AU economy is generally reflected in the NZ economy, except worse.  Salaries are worse, there are fewer employment opportunities, the economy is more fragile, the true cost of living is higher.

It's not perfect in AU, but it's better.  I know heaps of people who have moved across the ditch - not one person has regretted it.  Every single person now enjoys a better quality of life than they did in NZ.

NZ is a beautiful country, but it's being ruined by the people who live here.  It is no longer a country for young people wanting to get ahead, which saddens me.

Are they leaping from the frying pan into the fire!

"Australia Services Index Plunges to Significant Contraction; Bleakest of Views From Retail Shops; Retail and Housing Bloodbath Coming Up"

http://globaleconomicanalysis.blogspot.co.nz/2012/03/australia-services-index-plunges-to.html

"There is so much misguided drivel in the article that I hardly know where to start.

Here is some nonsense about a shopper's sweet spot: "For shoppers, it's something of a sweet spot. They've never had it so good. The $100 you spend in a supermarket buys you about 5 per cent more in goods than it did a year ago."

Retail prices in Australia are absurd. A 5% reduction in prices is hardly a bargain. As for the notion mining will carry the economy, forget about it. Commodity prices are going to plunge, and besides, commodities are not a big driver of jobs anyway.

There is no "floor" under retail. The bottom is going to fall out, and unemployment is going to soar. In turn, rising unemployment will clobber Australia's already deep-in-trouble housing sector.

As for small shops, they are completely doomed. Store owners with little leeway on wages will not get the income they need to pay taxes, interest, utilities, and rent.

Expect an across the board retail and housing bloodbath because one is coming.

OK folks,if you had a gork at the Mish report on Aus...that wee thing between the ears should be buzzing with fear because guess how important the aussie market is for NZ exports!....Stands to reason the lights in the Beehive should be burning bright all night right now....expect a sharper axe to swing down on the state sector splurge....if it gets bad enough we might even see the bloated salaries wound back to reflect reality of recession....the half million dollar club in wgtn will have to close...or start charging for the drinks!

Gosh do you realise if it gets real serious like...Nic Smith the 'gas bag' might begin to do more than talk about doing something about the local govt salary grab going on....then again maybe not!
